Turkish Cypriots call for revival of Annan plan on Cyprus unification

The Turkish Cypriots called for the revival of Annan’s plan on the unification of Cyprus, the Greek newspaper Elefterotypia reported.

Mehmet Ali Talat, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Ankara, sent a document to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon containing the purposes of Nicosia and Ankara.

Among them are the presentation of Kofi Annan’s plan and setting a deadline for the talks on the Cyprus issue.

FOCUS News Agency reminds: The plan of the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan envisages the transformation of Cyprus into a federation that consists of two zones. At a referendum held on April 24, 2004 the Turkish Cypriots approved Annan’s plan, but the Greek Cypriots rejected it.

On May 1, 2004 the Republic of Cyprus joined the EU. The Turkish Republic on Northern Cyprus is still recognized only by Ankara
